The overarching legislation covering the collection, transport, recovery and disposal of waste. This Directive requires Member States to take all appropriate action to ensure that waste is recovered or disposed of without endangering human health or causing harm to the environment.
The Landfill Directive aims to prevent or, as far as is possible, reduce the negative effects on the environment from the landfilling of waste. It contains strict technical requirements for waste and landfills and sets targets for the reduction of bio-degradeable municipal waste going to landfill.
This Directive covers electrical and electronic equipment with the objective of preventing waste and promoting recycling of WEEE.
This Directive seeks to promote the safe collection and disposal of waste oils.
Defines hazardous waste and outlines controls for its management, movement and tracking.
Towards Resource Management
A Waste Management Strategy for Northern Ireland 2006-20
In October 2005, the Department of Environment issued a consultation document on a new Waste Management Strategy for Northern Ireland. The document elicited 53 responses and, as far as possible, these are reflected in the Strategy.
The Waste Management Strategy is set out in three parts. The key policies and actions are presented as six policy strands, shown in the diagram below. Progress will depend on taking action in all six interdependent areas.
