ABOUT WASTE PDSU

PDSU Vision

Our aim is to provide quality support and advice to the three Waste Management Groups and Central Government in delivering the waste management infrastructure required to ensure compliance with the EU Landfill Directive.

Who We Are

Northern Ireland faces enormous challenges over the next few years as it strives to build a waste infrastructure to ensure compliance with the European Union Directive on the use of landfill to handle biodegradable municipal waste (BMW).

The Waste Programme Delivery Support Unit (PDSU) has been established to provide assistance to the twenty-six councils in Northern Ireland that hold responsibility for the collection, treatment and disposal of household municipal waste.

Local authorities have arranged themselves into three strategic groups, Arc 21, North West Region Waste Management Group (NWRWMG) and Southern Waste Management Partnership (SWaMP2008).

The Department of Environment (DoE) and the Strategic Investment Board (SIB) are co-funding the PDSU for a period of at least three years. The formation of the PDSU was a main recommendation arising from the work of the Waste Infrastructure Task Force.

The PDSU provides specific expertise and advice to the three strategic local authority groups in the form of consultancy, financial support and strategic guidance. The unit offers advice in three core areas: Procurement/Contracts, Planning and PR/Communications.
